thE sTORY:
I remember Russ and Anna Bryant came to me with a “bought” set of house plans with some modifications they wanted. They owned some acreage in Simpsonville, SC that was sold for commercial development but saved a parcel that was very important to them, a hand sprigged Bermuda grass hay field (for horses) that had been in the family for multiple generations.
At our first meeting, I recommended they look over Sarah Susanka’s book “Not So Big House” and I set about studying the plans they brought me. At our second meeting, I remember they came with the “just read book” in hand, with post-it notes protruding from every corner. I showed them some the problems I was discovering with the changes and catalog plans, and then I tentatively mentioned we could start from scratch. They said yes without hesitation. I’m so glad they did. I love this house.
I asked Trey Cole if he would be interested in the project and he was. We met for the third time at the property and I remember Trey mentioning, this would be a wonderful setting for a Prairie style house. The Bryant’s embraced this idea whole heartedly and we were off. This was the first job where I began developing my “new home questionnaire”. I feel it really paid off.
A big thank you to Dave Wilder Photography, for the final pictures of the Bryant House.
